INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT AREA

During the recent years, fast advances are made and reported by researcher from both academia and industry
for a wide range of problems in the context of parallel, networking and emergent distributed systems,
which are enabling the development of large-scale distributed applications from many areas of science and engineering.

Unlike the traditional parallel computing for supercomputers and LANs, programming and developing
parallel applications in large-scale distributed systems, such as Grids and P2P systems, is raising
issues and needs not tackled before. Among these issues we could distinguish the following:

• The large scale factor: large-scale distributed systems are expected
  to connect a large number of computational resources. The PlanetLab platform,
  Grid5000 in France, NASA's Information Power Grid, IBM, HP Grids are such examples.
• Large number of users and applications: a large number of users and applications
  will be deployed and co-exist in such systems.
• High heterogeneity of resources and interconnection networks:  large scale
  distributed systems will connect, through heterogeneous networks, very disparate
  heterogonous resources, from laptops and PCs to clusters, supercomputers
  and big servers.  
• High diversity of applications: the applications running on large scale
  distributed systems are very diverse, ranging from massive processing,
  data intensive and computing intensive applications, arising in complex
  scientific problems, bio-informatics, multi-media, etc.
• Dynamicity: large scale distributed systems are dynamic in nature; resources
  can be dynamically added to or dropped from the system.

From the above characteristics, novel issues of accessibility, resource discovery, scalability,
fault tolerance, etc. are arising in both programming and application development in parallel computing
in Grid, P2P and Network-based systems. Therefore, new methodologies, programming models, tools and techniques
are imperative to deal with the impact of the large scale and other factors mentioned above on parallel algorithms,
methodologies and applications.

OBJECTIVES AND MISSION

The objective is the book is to bring a comprehensive view of most important and recent advances in methodologies,
programming models, tools and techniques for parallel algorithms and applications in Grid, P2P and Network-based systems.  
A careful selection of the chapters will be done, on the one hand, to cover a broad spectrum of issues and applications
still keeping a reasonable trade-off between theoretic and practical issues, and, on the other, to achieve
as much as possible a self-contained book.
