JPPF Windows Screensaver
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:18:32 PM »

Hi, I noticed that the latest version of the screensaver comes with 1.9.x and I was wondering if it would work with any future jppf versions (2.0, 2.1,..)

Thanks

Hello,

The screensaver will not work with any 2.x version of JPPF.
We have abandoned it as we were relying on the screensaver sdk project for the implementation.
Unfortunately, this project seems to be pretty much dead: the last code commit was about 3 years ago.
The problem is that the screensaver does not work on Windows 64 platforms, including XP, Vista, 7, 2008, etc... That's a severe limitation, which is why we chose not to include it anymore.

We have kept the integration code we had in 1.9.x, and we hope to have the opportunity to write a .Net screensaver that runs a JVM, but it is not a currently a high priority task in our list.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,
-Laurent

Hello,

I wanted to update you on this topic.
I was finally able to envision a solution that will allow JPPF to take advantage of idle computers, without requiring the development of platform-specific native code.
We are taking advantage of the Java Native Access (JNA) APIs to query the system for idle time (i.e. time without keyboard or mouse input).
For tracking purposes, I registered a feature request for this: 3059420 - Take advantage of idle computers, you can read on for more details.

Sincerely,
-Laurent

I justed the old screensaver node on Windows 7 x64 version and it works fine. Where can I find the source code for the screensaver code? I would like to develop it further.

High,

The code is still part of JPPF 1.9.2, you should find it on our downloads page. Dowload the source distribution and you wil find it in the "node" module.
You may also pull it from our SVN repository (tag v_1_9_2).

I hope this helps,
-Laurent
